An Overview of the 27.5'' Bike Tube

MTB

The 27.5'' Bike Tube

Tire size is a hotly debated subject in mountain biking. For many years, the 26-inch tire was the standard, providing excellent maneuverability, control, and rim stability during tough impacts. However, larger tires offer more traction and better rollover ability on roots and rocks in rough terrain, which around 2018 caused the rapid rise of the so-called 29er, mountain bikes with a 29-inch tire. By then, the 26-inch bike had almost vanished from the market, replaced by an in-between size that mostly went unnoticed until around 2013: the 27.5-inch wheel. Today, 29-inch and 27.5-inch tires are both common in the MTB world. Here's what makes the 27.5-inch tire and tube unique.

Why Riders Choose a 27.5” Tire

The 27.5-inch wheel truly excels on technical trails with tight turns. Tires and tubes in this size are also lighter than those in 29-inch wheels. For many mountain bikers, a 27.5-inch bike offers the best compromise between speed and comfort—although wheels in this size may have trouble with bigger obstacles and slightly higher rolling resistance compared to a 29er.

The 27.5” Bike Tube and Its Features

The inner tube has long been a crucial part of the tire, and for over 130 years, it was made from traditional black butyl rubber. These tubes varied in rubber compounds, wall thicknesses, and valve types. In the mountain biking world, the main valve types are the Schrader valve (also known as an auto valve) and the narrower Presta valve (also called a French valve or Sclaverand valve). The Dunlop valve—similar to the 26-inch tire itself—has nearly disappeared from mountain biking. Additionally, the use of butyl rubber is aging, and newer options like tubeless systems and the TPU tube are gaining popularity.

The AERON TPU Tube for Mountain Bikes

Tubeless systems operate – as the name indicates – without an inner tube. We've summarized the differences between tubeless and tube-based systems in a separate article for you. A TPU tube is made from thermoplastic polyurethane, a material that not only retains air more reliably and is much more puncture-resistant than a butyl tube, but is also 100% recyclable due to its material purity. AERON TPU, an innovative TPU tube manufacturer, has launched a new 27.5'' bike tube for mountain biking. For maximum riding enjoyment, you can choose between an ultralight tube for minimal rolling resistance or a thicker-walled tube for superior puncture protection. All TPU tubes compress into a very small size, making them an excellent spare tube option. And best of all: thanks to its flexibility, the tube can also be stretched to fit a 28-inch or 29-inch rim (according to the ETRTO table). Full details are available in the descriptions of our AERON TPU tubes and in our magazine
